Translator detecting if it's live or test

Eliot, you mentioned when I was there in training that there was a way to put code into a translator script that would permit it to detect if it was being run in production, or just in the translator IDE, and then use that state as a condition of writing data into the actual DB tables. I was looking around to see if that code is available, but can’t seem to locate a reference. Can you help?
